Fire and ice co-exist at Antarctica’s Mt. Erebus, the southernmost volcano in the world. Researchers have studied the volcano for decades trying to understand more and more how microorganisms can live in such extreme conditions. Air temperatures during the winter are on average -58˚F and the summer really heats up at -4˚F. While the air is cold the ground is not. Volcanic soil causes for boiling temperatures, which is why scientists are so intrigued about life on Erebus. Below are some images from photographer Carsten Peter taken on a recent trip to the volcano with researchers.
